Durban International Airport

Durban International Airport which was formerly known as Louis Botha Airport provided its services as an international airport of Durban from 1951 until 2010. After that it was replace by King Shaka International Airport which is located 60 kilometers to the North.


History


The airport was established in 1951 and was known as Louis Botha International Airport in the beginning. The airport carried on with this name until the political crisis of 1994. The airport suffered from low international passenger rate because of many reasons but top of them being short run way for a boing 747 to take off or land, the hub and spoke policy adopted in the 1990’s. Due to factors like these this airport lost major portion of its international flights.

When it was functional, the airport provided the passengers with several different facilities to make their travelling as comfortable as possible. The basic facilities are


Help Room


The airport had a help room where the passengers and the people who are planning to travel by Durban Airport can call and get all the necessary information like flight timings, booking confirmations, flight arrivals, and phone numbers of different departments of the airport and ticket prices.


Shops and Restaurants


The Dublin Airport had more than 45 well reputed branded shops that provided the passengers to shop at their will from variety of different options. The prices of the goods were maintained so that a number of people can be attracted to visit the shops. On the whole the passengers had a good shopping experience. The airport also had 2 restaurants that served fresh and delicious food to the passengers and that too in very reasonable cost as well. The airport had a Bar/ café service for anyone who liked to enjoy a drink or two. Apart from this the café also served hot and cold beverages, ice creams, juices and ice cream shakes.


Lost and Found Department


Under the supervision of the Dublin Police department and the airport security the lost and found department was always busy helping the people to find and return their belongings. This department used to be open from 5 AM in the morning till 11 PM in the night. Anyone with the lost luggage/ belongings can see the footage of the cameras installed all over the airport and can identify the place where he/she lost it. Plus they also have to prove their ownership as well.


Parking


The airport had a reasonable parking area for the passengers. It had a total capacity of accommodating more than 5000 cars at a time. The parking however was not free and the passengers had to pay a predetermined per hour amount for the parking.
