Africa’s Travel Indaba is expected to contribute more than R1.2 billion with a hotel occupancy of 85% as delegates flock to Durban. Africa’s Travel Indaba 2024 (ATI) is well on track to outperform last year’s event and is expected to contribute more than R1.2 billion to the national fiscus.
The announcement that the Hilton Durban hotel will reopen “soon” after closing in 2021 due to the Covid-19 outbreak has been warmly received by the eThekwini metro and the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (Fedhasa). This will bring five-star lodging back to the city center.
On Monday, eThekwini Municipality confirmed the re-opening of the Hilton Hotel, three years after it closed in January 2021. The hotel is situated in a prime location within the city’s business tourism Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) precinct. This area also houses the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre and the Durban Exhibition Centre, making it an appealing option for delegates, as it provides convenient travel from accommodation to conference venues.
The Westville Pavilion will host the Durban Street Food Festival on September 6 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., September 7 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and September 8 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Imvusa Trading has been granted a long-term lease and the ability to redevelop the iconic beachfront property at 137 Marine Parade, also referred to as “Joe Cools,” by the eThekwini Municipality.
